Original Patina is for classic vehicles built between 1940 and 1990 that have their original factory paint finish intact or which is a mix of original and aftermarket paint and looking to have the paint revived and preserved for the years and decades ahead
Older enamels and acrylic lacquer paints require a different process to restore them than modern factory and aftermarket paints
The paint is open to the elements as it is not catalysed like modern paint which prevents petrol from staining it and paint thinner from damaging these new paints and they also are clear coated for even more protection
Our service involves a variety of proprietary processes including an all new restorative polish with unique abrasives made just for classic paints
The use of our ultrasonic gauge to measure the paint films thickness will also be implemented in order to know exactly what we have to work with and make sure we remove only the tiniest amount of paint.
This service is unique because it includes many special products that are non abrasive and processes that no other detailing businesses have access too or know about
We can decontaminate, deep clean, purify, polish, enhance and protect these paints
Any permanent defects like crows feet and cracking are not fixable due to the nature of old paints
These older paints can also be either very thick or very thin depending on the amount of times they have been polished over the years
Many have had tender loving care from passionate owners who may have over polished or over waxed the car causing ill effects such as thin paint
Or the exact opposite, sitting in a field/paddock and being bombarded with extreme heat and UV rays (cause of oxidation along with oxygen), as well as hail and rain damage (pitting/etching) as was the case of the Oldsmobile 88 wagon in the slideshow above with sat in a field for fourty years before it came to us
In some cases, bird dropping etchings can be sanded out but we will only do this if the paint is thick enough in that area to withstand the film build removal required in order to totally remove it
However we will do our very best to maximise gloss and clarity regardless of the damaged spots and protect it with our specialty coating to protect the paint beyond what a paint sealant or wax can achieve
Note: We use a special water based polish with ultra small abrasives that was developed by our chemist just for this service and it is totally safe for old paints as it does not contain harsh solvents
The majority of compounds and polishes today still contain high amounts of solvents such as kerosene, stoddard solvent naptha and white spirits and large, very sharply shaped abrasive particles
These can never create the same level of gloss and clarity that our water based polishes can and they hurt the resin binders that hold the paint film together
The level of gloss and clarity we can achieve is limited by the quality of the original paint, the finish quality may vary between vehicles
We will endeavour to extract the best results from each vehicle's paint finish whilst always focusing on preserving the paint's integrity
